Travel Information

bus shelterBy following these simple guidelines, getting about using our bus services is easy!

1. Plan your trip

Options to help you plan your trip:

  • Use the Transport Infoline TripPlanner to plan your exact trip from A to B across all modes of transport (bus, ferry and train). You can also call 131 500 between 6am and 10pm, 7 days a week for the cost of a local phone call.
  • If you know the bus route you want to make a trip on, download the timetable from this website. You can also obtain timetable booklets from Sydney Buses TransitShops or from many ticket agents (newsagents along bus routes).
  • To see all services in your area, use the regional map to determine which routes to take and then view the relevant timetables.
  • Check for Breaking News. You can also check for major service disruptions by calling the Transport Infoline on 131 500 and selecting 2. Service disruptions such as marches, parades, major traffic incidents or roadworks may be planned, or may happen at short notice. By checking before you travel, you can keep up to date on whether your trip is affected.

2. Purchase your ticket

Choose from a range of ticket types for your trip.

  • We encourage customers to PrePay by buying a ticket before you travel. You can pay for a single trip fare to the driver (excluding "Prepay Only" bus services), or purchase single ride tickets from TransitShops or selected agents. TravelTen tickets allow you to buy ten trips at once, at a discounted rate, with no expiry date. DayTripper tickets include unlimited travel on bus, ferry and train services for a day, until 4am. TravelPasses (Weekly, Quarterly & Yearly) allow unlimited travel on different transport modes in specified zones. By carefully selecting your ticket, you can take advantage of the many discounts available.
  • For single fares and TravelTen tickets, you need to work out how many sections you plan to travel in. To do this, view the relevant route map on this website. Once you know how many sections you need to travel in, view our price list. If you need help working out your fare, call the Transport Infoline on 131500 and press 1 then 2.
  • Remember to look after your ticket and to ensure it is valid for your trip. Ask the driver if you’re unsure. Hefty fines exist for those found without valid tickets.

3. Depart

So you’re ready to take your trip, what do you do now?

  • Allow plenty of time to get to your bus stop. We recommend getting to the bus stop at least five minutes prior to the scheduled departure.
  • Have your ticket ready. You will have to insert it into a ticket machine when you board the bus.
  • If you use cash, please have the correct change available as our drivers have limited change facilities plus it helps to speed up boarding times.
  • If you have limited mobility and require assistance, refer to the accessible travel information.
  • Remember that you must clearly signal the driver to stop. Ensure that you allow sufficient time for the driver to pull away from the traffic and to the kerb.

4. Travel

Whilst onboard buses, there are some things to remember.

  • Travel safely and follow all instructions on the bus. Do not disrupt the driver or interfere with the operation of the bus.
  • Move inside the bus and do not obstruct the access areas. Stand clear of red safety areas near the doors. At busy times, it is important to move towards to back of the bus.
  • Vacate priority seating for disabled, elderly or less mobile passengers.
  • If there are no seats available, hold on to a hand strap or handrail at all times.
  • Smoking, eating or drinking is not permitted on buses.

5. End your journey

Ending your journey is as easy as starting it.

  • When you get near your destination, press one of the next stop buttons. The bell will sound and the next stop light be come on. Remember to allow enough time for the driver to stop safely and smoothly - if possible press the button as soon as the bus leaves the previous stop. If you're not sure of your final destination, please ask the driver.
  • Remember to take all your belongings with you. If you do misplace something, you’ll need to contact our lost property departments. If you see some Lost Property, inform the driver immediately.

So there you have it, that’s enough information to get you on your way. We hope you found it useful and that your travel on our buses is enjoyable.
